Wellbutrin Birth Defect Help

FOR A FREE CONSULTATION: CALL 1-800-632-1404

Did you take Wellbutrin in early pregnancy? Was your child born with a birth defect? We may be able to help.

Our team of Wellbutrin attorneys are currently reviewing potential Wellbutrin lawsuits involving women who took Wellbutrin during early pregnancy and whose children suffered adverse side effects. Wellbutrin, an antidepressant prescription drug generically called Bupropion hydrochloride, has been linked in a recent study to serious side effects in women who take this drug during early pregnancy.

A July 2010 article in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology indicates there may be a link between Wellbutrin use during pregnancy and certain heart defects.  Children of women who took Wellbutrin in the first trimester of pregnancy appear to have a higher incidence of left outflow tract heart defects including aortic stenosis, pulmonary stenosis and coarctation of the aorta.

Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Bupropion hydrochloride is used to treat Major Depressive Disorder and Seasonal Affective Disorder. First approved by the FDA in 1985, Bupropion hydrochloride was available for several years only under the brand name Wellbutrin. In 1996, the FDA aproved a sustained-release tablet of this drug called Wellbutrin SR and, in 2003, approved an extended-release tablet known as Wellbutrin XL.

If you or a loved one took Wellbutrin during early pregnancy and had a child born with a birth defect, this side effect may be associated with Wellbutrin. Attorney Ed Wallis is currently reviewing potential Wellbutrin lawsuits. If you have a question or have suffered serious side effects, Wellbutrin lawyer Ed Wallis can be reached by email or by calling +1 901.275.0600 or 1-800-632-1404.

Ed Wallis is an attorney currently representing clients who have taken several prescription drugs and claim injuries associated with those drugs, including Wellbutrin, Paxil, Avandia, Accutane and Reglan. He also represents clients across the globe pertaining to medical device failures, including the Advanced Bionics HiRes90k cochlear implant and the Gynecare Prolift transvaginal mesh – sling and the DePuy hip implant. Side Effects

Women who take the prescription drug Wellbutrin, an anti-depressant drug generically called Bupropion hydrochloride, during early pregnancy may have an increased risk of giving birth to a baby suffering from birth defects, specifically left outflow heart defects.

Congenital heart defects affect approximately 40,000 babies each year, and one of the primary known causes of these birth defects is ingestion of teratogenic drugs during pregnancy. A teratogen is a drug or other substance capable of interfering with the development of a fetus that can ultimately result in serious birth defects including ASD, VSD, Left Hypoplastic Heart Syndrome, coarctation of the aorta, Tricuspid or Pulmonary Atresia, Pulmonary Stenosis, transposition of the great vessels or any other heart defect), neural tube defect, craniosynostosis, and club foot.

Wellbutrin carries a Pregnancy Category C classification. A drug is a Category C when animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and when there are either no adequate or well-controlled studies in humans.

The recent study linking Wellbutrin to birth defects in women who consume this drug during early pregnancy is based on an article published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology.  This study explores a positive association between early pregnancy Wellbutrin use and left outflow tract heart birth defects. Researchers caution that the findings of this study are not conclusive and that further research is needed to confirm the findings. Women taking Wellbutrin who are planning to become pregnant should speak with their doctors about the potential side effects and alternative options.

Wellbutrin Tricuspid or Pulmonary Atresia Lawsuits

Wellbutrin heart defect lawsuit

NO COST, NO OBLIGATION CONSULTATION – CALL TOLL FREE 1-800-632-1404

If your child has been diagnosed with tricuspid atresia or pulmonary atresia, and you or a loved one took Wellbutrin during pregnancy, we can help. Your time may be running out – call us today.

Tricuspid atresia is a form of congenital heart disease whereby there is a complete absence of the tricuspid valve. Therefore, there is an absence of right atrioventricular connection. Because of this, the body does not have enough oxygen to live, and steps must be taken to keep the child alive. Because of the lack of an A-V connection, an atrial septal defect (ASD) must be present to maintain blood flow. Also, since there is a lack of a right ventricle there must be a way to pump blood into the pulmonary arteries, and this is accomplished by a ventricular septal defect (VSD).

Pulmonary atresia is a congenital malformation of the pulmonary valve in which the valve orifice fails to develop. The valve is completely closed thereby obstructing the outflow of blood from the heart to the lungs. With the disease pulmonary atresia, the flap-like openings are completely covered by a layer of tissue, thus preventing the ability of blood flow to the lungs to become oxygenated. The body requires oxygenated blood for survival. Pulmonary atresia is not threatening to a developing fetus however, because the mother’s placenta provides the needed oxygen since the baby’s lungs are not yet functional. Once the baby is born its lungs must now provide the oxygen needed for survival, but with Pulmonary atresia there is no opening on the pulmonary valve for blood to get to the lungs and become oxygenated and the only source of pulmonary blood flow is a patent ductus arteriosus. Due to this, the newborn baby is blue in color and pulmonary atresia can usually be diagnosed within hours or minutes after birth.

Coarctation of the aorta, or aortic coarctation, is a congenital condition whereby the aorta narrows in the area where the ductus arteriosus (ligamentum arteriosum after regression) inserts. There are three types: (1) Preductal coarctation (narrowing is proximal to the ductus arteriosus); (2) Ductal coarctation (narrowing occurs at the insertion of the ductus arteriosus)l and (3) Postductal coarctation (narrowing is distal to the insertion of the ductus arteriosus).

Therapy is usually conservative for this condition, although surgery may be necessary. The condition is severe, and medical appointments and procedures are necessary.

Wellbutrin May Cause Left Hypoplastic Heart Syndrome: Attorney Injury Help

FREE AND NO OBLIGATION CONSULTATION AVAILABLE: CALL 1-800-632-1404 TODAY.

Our team of Wellbutrin lawyers is offering free nationwide case evaluations to families whose children were diagnosed with medical conditions at birth or shortly therafter when the mother ingested Wellbutrin or Bupropion during pregnancy including Left Hypoplastic Heart Syndrome.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (also known as HLHS), is a rare congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped.  In babies with HLHS, the aorta and left ventricle are very small, and the aortic and mitral valves are either too small to allow sufficient blood flow or are atretic (closed) altogether. As blood returns from the lungs to the left atrium, it must pass through an atrial septal defect to the right side of the heart.  In cases of HLHS, the right side of the heart often must pump blood to the body through a patent ductus arteriosus. As the ductus arteriosus usually closes within eleven days after birth, blood flow is severely restricted and eventually cut off, leading to dangerously low circulation and eventually to shock.

Without life-prolonging interventions, HLHS is fatal, but with intervention, an infant may survive. A pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon may perform a series of operations or a full heart transplant. In the meantime, the ductus may be kept open to allow blood-flow using medication containing prostaglandin. Because these operations are complex and need to be individualized for each patient, a cardiologist must assess all medical and surgical options on a case-by-case basis.

Currently, infants who undergo either the staged reconstructive surgery or who undergo cardiac transplantation have a 5-year survival of approximately 60%. Further, studies show that about 50% of those children who survive surgery have developmental delay or need special education. About 25% of surgical survivors have severe disabilities.

If you or a loved one took Wellbutrin during early pregnancy and had a child born with a birth defect, this side effect may be associated with Wellbutrin. Our team of Wellbutrin / Bupropion attorneys are currently reviewing potential Wellbutrin lawsuits.
